You can become an affiliate of thousands of companies that do business over the internet; this is called affiliate marketing. You don't need your own products, because you promote the company's products or services, by advertising on the internet. When a visitor follows your own special link that the company gives you, to the main website and buys a product, you get paid a commission.
One of the greatest advantages of affiliate marketing, for those new to making money on the internet, is that you are not responsible for any customer service like shipping, follow up, returns and complaints. The company that owns the product does all of that. Your role is to attract visitors to the website that promotes the product or service.
There is considerable difference in the percentage of commissions paid by various companies and on different products. To make the best incomes, you need to choose products that pay well but do not have too many other affiliates competing for sales of the same product. Finding these will take some research, but the potential results are well worth the original effort.
Most of the companies with affiliate programs give you a website that your affiliate link opens. These are often only a single page (a landing page) that pre-sells the product. When the visitor clicks the link on this page, they are directed to the company website and, hopefully, the order page. This is an easy way to begin affiliate marketing, because you can learn the basics without too much effort or expense. However, there may be hundreds or thousands of other affiliate marketers also using the same "website", and over-use of the page could limit your success.
If you have your own website, you have more control over the type of information your visitors receive. You can promote several products from the one site, instead of being restricted to the one product or company. Your advertising can promote a group of products and this becomes much more cost effective, than having to advertise several products separately.
It doesn't have to be expensive to set up your own website; there are many website building programs and templates available that are inexpensive or even free. They may not be fancy, but they are certainly a great way to get started. Choosing a domain name is the next step and then finding a web host; hosting is needed to enable visitors to find your site. Start off with a basic hosting package; you can always upgrade as you become more experienced.
When deciding on the products to promote from your website, choose several that are in a related niche or subject area. Popular niches are crowded with websites and difficult to break into; a good idea is to take a small, less-used corner of a popular niche that is more specialized. For example, the 'internet marketing' niche is like a crowded six lane highway in peak hour and the competition is fierce. But maybe if you serviced a specialized area of 'internet marketing for computer dummies', for example, you might find less competition and greater success.
All that is needed now, in your affiliate marketing business, is to advertise your products to attract visitors (called traffic) to your website. There are numerous traffic methods and loads of information on how and where to find them. You will need to track the results from each traffic source and product to make sure you have the most profitable business possible.
